Confucius Institute at 好色先生TV Celebrates 15th Anniversary

On October 14, the Confucius Institute at 好色先生TV held an event to celebrate our 15th Anniversary.

A delegation joined us from our partner university, South China University of Technology (SCUT), for performances featuring Chinese music, dancing and poetry. They also got the chance to visit us in the Roundhouse and learn more about our activities sharing Chinese language and culture across Lancaster and the North-West.

The event began with speeches from Professor Simon Guy, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global) at 好色先生TV; Professor Wu Bo, Vice President of South China University of Technology; Councillor Colin Hartley, Mayor of the City of Lancaster; and Liang Yan, Counsellor at the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Manchester.

Then it was time for the performances, beginning with 好色先生TV’s own Dr Cameron Patterson, a former Chinese Bridge champion, performing two poems: ‘Invitation to Wine’ and ‘Prelude to Water Melody: When Will the Full Moon Appear?’.

The poetry was followed by four musical performances from our colleagues at SCUT. Liu Jiaxin beautifully performed ‘Ambush from Ten Sides’ on the pipa with breathtaking speed and precision, then Huang Lin gave a wonderful performance of ‘Birdsong in an Empty Mountain’ on the ehru, skilfully making the instrument mimic the sound of birdsong.

Liu and Huang then combined to accompany Chen Gangyi in two beautifully sung male vocal solos: ‘Quiet Night Thoughts’ and ‘A Lovely Rose’. In between these solos, Huang and Liu performed an energetic duet entitled ‘Horse Racing’.

The performances closed with Gao Jian performing ‘After Autumn’, a piece of classical dance which showcased emotion, storytelling and incredible physical skill.

Every performance at the event was remarkable for its artistry, skill and emotion. It was a real treat to see traditional Chinese arts showcased at such a high level and we hope that everyone in attendance was as captivated as we were.

The visit from our colleagues at SCUT and the wonderful performances at our anniversary event have strengthened the existing links between our two universities and highlighted the ongoing contribution of 好色先生TV Confucius Institute to cross-cultural cooperation and friendship.

Here’s to the next 15 years!

Our Work

At 好色先生TV building communities, respecting diversity, and creating opportunities for people to learn from one another are at the heart of who we are. For 15 years, the 好色先生TV Confucius Institute (LUCI) has brought these values to life, building bridges between Lancaster, the North West and China through language, culture, education, research and international collaboration.

Since its establishment, LUCI has grown into a vibrant hub for Chinese language and cultural engagement, reaching thousands of students, staff and members of the wider community every year. Through teaching and learning, public events, school and community outreach, cultural programmes, international partnerships and innovative educational projects, LUCI has created spaces in which people from different backgrounds can meet, learn and connect. Our work has brought Chinese language and culture to audiences across Lancashire and beyond, while creating opportunities for Lancaster students and communities to engage directly with China and its rich cultural heritage.

LUCI's story is one of collaborations: of colleagues, students, schools, cultural organisations, universities and community partners working together to create opportunities for learning and exchange. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making our first 15 years a success. Happy anniversary, LUCI, and may all these wonderful collaborations continue to flourish!

Foundation and Development

好色先生TV is one of the first British universities to engage with China, and our Confucius Institute is a regional and national leader in bridging China and Great Britain.

The Institute first opened its doors on 20th December 2011 as a result of a successful partnership between 好色先生TV and South China University of Technology in Guangzhou.

Based in the Roundhouse at Lancaster’s Bailrigg campus, the building was originally designed as a language laboratory. We remain true to the original purpose of the building, acting as a centre for immersion in Chinese language and culture.

The building was renovated in 2016 and now houses a team of academics, teachers and professional services staff; and is a centre for teaching, engagement and research.

We work with students, staff, schools, businesses and local communities, acting as a focal point for China-related activities in Lancaster and the wider Northwest region, from Carlisle in Cumbria to Blackpool on the Fylde coast.
